Outreach Activities

Our group hosts and participates in a number of outreach activities throughout the year.  Some examples are shown below.  Please contact Geoff if you are interested in more details and/or are interested in visiting our labs.

Glass Shop Outreach

Glassy Ladies!

In 2018,  Dr. Brennecka’s students Brionna, Valerie, Allison, and Katie worked with guest lecturer Dr. Gorman to host a local Girl Scout troop and teach them about the Art and Science of Glassblowing. The girls had a great time making flowers and paperweights and learning about how chemistry and stress can change the way pieces end up looking.

JEFFERSON COUNTY EXECUTIVE HIGH SCHOOL INTERN PROGRAM:

Each year, we have the opportunity to host a few rising HS seniors as part of the Jeffco Executive Intern program. These students (Addison Wong and Hanna Skuladottir are shown here) worked in our labs and learned a lot about processing and electrical measurements of ceramics!

In addition, we host a number of tours and other visitors throughout the year. The photos below are from a SUMMET (SUMmer Minority Engineering Program) / SAFE summer program for high school and middle school students in which our group participates heavily.

Adams County Career Fair:

We also get to send students to the Adams County Career Fair each year. Our students talk with high schoolers interested in scientific careers and help them learn about what might be interesting to them and how they might be able to pursue those interests in college and beyond!
